Web site and server monitoring for free

I operate multiple small web sites on Linux, Apache, Mysql, Php stack on the cheapest servers I can find. At the moment I have a server from Godaddy (costs ~USD10/month) which comes with no tools at all.

I wanted to monitor the web sites and the server and I was also looking for a project to improve my Go skills so I started https://github.com/SBOsoft/SBOLogProcessor project as a command line tool that will generate metrics from web server access logs.

As I worked on the tool, things got escalated and I decided to develop my own web site and server monitoring tool with a web UI named SBOanalytics. It is intentionally simple and lightweight but depending on demand I think I will consider adding more features. If you want to take a look a live demo is also available.

If you are wondering why you would use SBOanalytics instead of Google analytics? Tools like Google analytics give you a partial picture, they won't tell you anything about

  • Bot traffic including AI bots (e.g if OpenAI is not visiting your web site then maybe you don't even exist)
  • Scanners (who is scanning, how often, how much of your resources are getting wasted for scanning and so on)
  • Failing requests, e.g how many 404 errors are your servers returning, maybe there are some broken links somewhere?
  • Also client side trackers will be missing information about people who reject cookies, use anti-trackers and similar

Download and test SBOanalytics free web site and web server metrics and monitoring tool and see it for yourself.

Obviously this tool is mainly for people running web sites on limited resources, like myself. If you are a corporate guy who likes to spend thousands for the simplest things then this tool won't cut it.
